Feisty Redheads!

Oh my. I think I have a wild one on my hands. At 1 day old, my little rodeo bronc already bucks, rears, strikes, kicks, and throws herself on the ground when she doesn't want to be handled!

But, that's what babies do. And redheads, especially. And redheaded fillies especially especially! She will learn soon enough.

More up in her pasterns today, they'll be good and strong soon!

No touchey my face!

She had the walleyed Mare Glare down pat and she's only a day old!

Special naughty filly trick - don't like your butt scratched? Just sit down!

Not sure what had P's attention, but she had it in full!

I can't believe she didn't inherit the family jughead!

She did, however, inherit the giant family ears!

O wants to steal this baby! She must think that it's hers, it looks like it should be hers anyway!

Already in the puddles! We've been totally flooded for days!

Cut her head off, but she definitely has found her sea legs!

She is CUTE CUTE CUTE though, despite her extreme redheadedness. We're still brooding on a name, any suggestions? Has to start with a D and can't be something generic/stupid/cliched/boring!

She and P both got an A+ from the vet today. Baby's IgG was well over 800 - not surprising given how late P got her milk in and how quickly baby latched (and promptly started sucking the life out of momma!). P has a minor bit of tearing but it's pretty minimal, and not surprising give how giant this filly was.

Now if it would only stop raining...! The first Games Day of the year is on Sunday. Given the fact that the horses have been heavily stalled as of late due to all the weather, and O hasn't been worked in about 2 weeks... ehhhh what could go wrong!

  1. So I don't know if this counts as cliche, but how about Delta-v? It literally means 'change in velocity' and is closely associated with rockets and spaceships, all of which seems appropriate for a big, strong, feisty mare.

I was sort of worried you'd end up with a calm, compliant horse and be bored. Shouldn't have worried. :-) She's adorable, thanks for sharing her with us!

  2. DANAË Δαναη f Greek Mythology
From Δαναοι (Danaoi), a word used by Homer to designate the Greeks. In Greek myth Danaë was a princess of Argos and the mother of Perseus by Zeus, who came to her in the form of a shower of gold.

    1. This is a great name idea!

I would also like to suggest Dani as in Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons.

  3. This is not a good name choice at all, but I think Diana like Diana Ross because she's a little diva!

  4. Oh man! I work at a breeding farm and I LOVE the fillies ;) So fresh! Luckily I work with Standardbreds so we don't get a ton of chestnuts but I've worked with two chestnut STB fillies and one chestnut colt in the past... I ended up loving them all, even if they were "typical chestnuts!"

As for a name, what about Denali? It is the highest mountain in North America after all! It would stay with the land theme of Pangea :) I also kind of like Despoina, who is the goddess of mysteries.

  7. Donatella comes to mind, just because of her sire's name! She seems a little feisty for it though!

The right name will jump out at you!

  8. I'm terrible at naming things, so won't even bother suggesting anything. Just wanted to say that she is so cute and the thought of filly tantrums is highly amusing.

  11. OMG the ears on that girl - she's super cute!

What about Delphine? I think it means dolphin, which doesn't have to do with anything, but it does roll off the tongue. Would probably sound good on a PA system lol ;D

  14. We have a mare in our barn named Delonix (which I think is a pretty cool name) -- but I've always liked the name Delawin for a mare too

  15. She is a cutey can't wait to watch her grow up under your care.

I've thought about the name since your post and have really struggled with it..

    So... my suggestion is Diatomite...

It's a type of sedimentary rock formed in marine environments and harkens to the geological references in Pangea. Sedimentary rock takes years and generations to form.. just like this little critter.

And it almost sounds like Dynamite... but isn't :)

You could call her Dia, Mitey for short... little Mitey Mare. (Although this is scarily close to Night Mare.)

Otherwise Drift... as in continental drift which separated the land mass of Pangea into the continents.

  16. Lots of good ideas here. I am the worst ever at naming anything, but I love looking at the wee one. From afar. ;-)

  17. She is just incredible. Good luck finding the best name for her! Lots of suggestions here. "Diedre" sometimes means "raging woman" which may be appropriate...

  18. Hmm, a chestnut filly with a blaze...D-Wren sounds like a good name! (Kidding). What about Debellate-to conquer in battle or Daria-kingly or posses well? She's so stinking cute and fiesty, I can't wait for more pictures of her.

  20. I love how O is about her. That picture in the previous post with her neck arched, sniffing noses with the baby is one of my favorites hehe. :) Everyone is going to think she's in the wrong stall because she definitely looks like she should be O's hehe.
